Hello Linux
Having a netbook without a pre-installed Operating System opened my world to Linux Ubuntu.
Being a Windows user since grade school, one may be afraid to try out Linux.
I have to say that I was brave enough to buy a netbook with No OS because I know I have a programmer friend named Ben, who can give me walk-through with the installation.
Indeed, when I got my netbook out of the box I had no idea what to do with it. How am I gonna make it work? How will I get Linux installed in it?
These are my troubles...
Well, it was an adventure surfing the net for solutions. Being in the forums reading and looking for answers.
This is what you get for buying a netbook with No OS. The package is cheaper and it is very rewarding to work on a New OS.
So, I was researching the net and I came across Ubuntu. They say this is user friendly and one of the best so I went to their official site: http://www.ubuntu.com/
Here you can download the netbook remix version for your netbook and also the version for desktop.
Most of the info available in the web and even in Youtube would tell you to install the OS by using a pendrive. This is not how I got it to work because I downloaded the image file and burned the image file into a CD.
Downloading the ISO image file from the official website...

I used my desktop to download the Ubuntu installer by the way.
After downloading the ISO image file into your pc's hard drive. You need to burn the ISO image into a CD.
Your CD burning software should have the feature to burn the ISO image file into a CD so when you run it, you will get the installation window right away. Since Nero is one of the popular program, I would have it as a sample although I used my Asus software that came with the External Drive.

Luckily, my Asus 1005P came with a free Asus External Optical Drive so I used this to run my CD to install Ubuntu. Simply plug and play this External drive in your netbook.

I got the latest Ubuntu Lucid 10.4 version by the way.
When you run the installer CD, you will get this screen.

You can try it out before you fully install it in your pc.
Your desktop should look something like this after installation.

Here is another look

You can always change the wallpaper!
I never thought it would be this cool to have Ubuntu. I like the interface better than Windows.
I love all the freebies and of course the Penguin wallpapers I've downloaded are soo cute.
